About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the nominal capital of the Netherlands, although the government's seat is in The Hague. Amsterdam is the largest city in the country with a population of over 750,000. More than 3.5 million tourists flock to visit the attractions of this unique city every year.

A Brief History of The Country

The Netherlands were first inhabited by German and Celtic tribes who liked the natural fortress of the lakes, rivers, woods, and wetlands. It was not until the 1st century BC that the Romans conquered the Southern regions, but were not able to conquer the Northern lands.

As the Roman Empire declined, Germanic tribes conquered the land; then much later, after the collapse of Charlemagne Empire, the country was ruled by various dukes, the most prominent being the Dukes of Burgundy and Hapsburg.

Despite these continuous wars and hegemonies, the Dutch became prosperous because of their naval power and trading ships.

However, by the 18th century, this tiny country, the Dutch Republic, was dwarfed by other European seafaring nations.

Toward the latter half of the 19th century, the Netherlands created important constitutional amendments and became a modern state with liberal policies.

Although the Dutch managed to stay out of World War I, they were occupied by the Germans in 1940 during World War II.

After the war, the Netherlands rose in economic growth and today it is amongst the most industrialized and prosperous nations in the world.

Amsterdam has numerous popular attractions for visitors, including the Oude Kerk church, the Dam Square, the Beginhof, the canals, the Maguere Brug, the Jordaan, the Rembrandtplein square, the Leidseplein square, the Albert Cuypmarkt museum, and the Artis Zoo.The Oude Kerk is an old church surrounded by little houses attached to its walls.

The Dam Square is a historical site in the heart of the city. The Begijnhof is a narrow passage surrounded by ancient houses. The numerous canals have led to Amsterdam being considered as a northern version of Venice. The Magere Brug, built in 1280, is famous for its skinny structure. The Jordaan is a colorful area, once a working class neighborhood. The Rembrandtplein square is known for it hotels, cafes, restaurants, and pubs, while the Leidesplein square is popular for its nightlife. The Albert Cuypmarkt is a busy outdoor market.
