Amsterdam Arena At A Glance
Construction of the Amsterdam Arena began in 1993, and it was officially opened in August of 1996 by Queen Beatrix. Singer Tina Turner was the first performer at the stadium, during her Wildest Dreams Tour which was watched by over 157,000 attendees.
The Amsterdam Arena is used for football games and music concerts, and is home to the Amsterdam football club, better known as AFC Ajax, which was founded over a hundred years ago. The Amsterdam Arena has a retractable roof and cost about about one hundred and forty million Euros to build. Initially the grass surface would not grow in the shaded areas, and had to be replaced frequently. During center-stage concerts the Amsterdam Arena can seat sixty-eight thousand guests, and about fifty-two thousand at sporting events.
There is an exclusive bicycle and motorbike parking garage which is only open during Amsterdam ArenA events, located nearby between the Heineken Music Hall and Villa ArenA. Also nearby is a fourteen-screen movie theater and large shopping center.
For public transportation to Amsterdam ArenA events, the Strandvliet Metro Station is north of the stadium, while the Bijlmer ArenA Station is on the south side, both within walking distance. Trains stop at Duivendiecht Station to the north and Bijlmer ArenA Station to the south, these are also within walking distance. The Amsterdam Metro Yellow Line runs the five-mile stretch from Amsterdam ArenA to the Centraal Station, making ten stops.
An exclusive car park connected to Amsterdam Arena is only open for stadium events. Taxis are not allowed at the main Amsterdam ArenA entrance after performances begin, but can be accessed adjacent to the car park. Amsterdam ArenA is about eight miles from Schiphol Airport.
There are over fifty places that supply food and drink within the Amsterdam ArenA during public events, and visitors can order a reloadable Amsterdam Arena card online which can be used at events. This is a great convenience to foreign visitors, since stadium vendors only take Euros.
