About Downtown Amsterdam
Amsterdam is where modern architecture developed organically between facades of historical buildings. Since it is not a big city, all sites of interest are within an acceptable distance. This is why Amsterdam is so popular with lovers of architecture. Amsterdam has one of the largest historic city centres in Europe, dating largely from the 17th century, the Golden Age of the Netherlands.
Destination Amsterdam
Amsterdam was once Europe’s best-kept secrets, but in the past several years, it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It seems as if Europeans themselves have discovered the secret, for they make up the majority of the over four-and-half million visitors yearly.
Most tourists, when they experience Amsterdam, mostly experience the center of the city, which makes up of a semi-circle with Central Station at its apex, and consists of several neighborhoods and districts. Five major concentric canals surround the Old Center, which form the Canal Ring: the Singel, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, the Prinsengracth, and the Singelgracht.
Other districts inside the city center include the Plantage, a lush area known for its zoo and botanical gardens, both of which are great tourist spots, and the Jordaan, a working-class area that has recently gone through extensive renewal to become decidedly upscale. Three roads (Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade, and Mauritskade) surround Amsterdam’s center area and mark the location of the old city moat and fortifications. Everything outside this line is newer, and was built after 1870.
Amsterdam hosts some of the nicest hotels in Europe. Most of its visitors stay in the nicer, four-or-five star hotels, two-thirds of which are located in the city’s center. The city’s main tourist attractions are mostly located in the downtown area as well. These attractions include its historic canals, the Anne Frank House, and its red-light district. Amsterdam is rich in museums: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, and the Stedelijk Museum. Additionally, its many cannabis coffee shops attract almost four million international visitors per year.
Amsterdam is one of the oldest and historic cities in all of Europe. Its name is derived from “Amstelredamme,” taken from its origin as a dam in the river Amstel. Founded as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, it became one of the most important ports in the world and became the center of finance and the diamond trade by the 17th century, when Holland made innovative developments in trade. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Amsterdam expanded into several new neighborhoods and suburbs.
