About Museum Square

The square is called "Museum Square" because four museums are located around the square: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Diamond Museum. The square was reconstructed in 1999 by Sven-Ingvar Andersson. It is used for (mass) events such as festivals, celebrations, and demonstrations.

A Brief Visitor’s Guide About Amsterdam’s Museum Square

Amsterdam's Museumplein, or Museum Square, is one of the most popular public spaces in the Netherlands. Rebuilt in 1999, it is the site of several of Amsterdam's festivals and celebrations. It is also the most popular site for demonstrations and street fairs.

Museum Square is a popular attraction among many locals because it features many attractions that offer locals many things to do all year long.

For example, Museum Square features a large pond that doubles as a popular outdoor skating rink during the winter. It also features an underground parking garage, an underground marketplace and several small cafes. The underground area underneath Museum Square is especially popular with locals because its cheerful lights and warm atmosphere offer a happy alternative to Amsterdam’s dank weather conditions.

Visitors will enjoy visiting Amsterdam’s Museum Square because many local attractions are located around its perimeter. Moreover, visitors might also enjoy visiting some of the attractions that are located on Museum Square itself.

For example, visitors who enjoy fine art will enjoy visiting one of the four museums that are located at each corner of Museum Square. These museums include the Diamond Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Stedlijk Museum and the world famous Van Gogh Museum.

If you enjoy fine dining, be sure to explore the many restaurants and coffee shops that dot the area around the Willem Parkweg, or Willem Parkway. Located just 100 meters north of Museum Square, Willem Parkway features several restaurants and cafes that serve contemporary French fare, Italian classics and traditional Dutch favorites at reasonable prices.

Furthermore, if you enjoy shopping, be sure to explore the shops that dot the area around Van Baerlestraat or Van Baerle Street. Located about 1 kilometer west of Museum Square, Van Barele Street features several jewelers, furniture shops, apparel stores and locally owned bookstores.

Moreover, the area just east of Van Baerle Street located on P.C Hooftstraat, or P.C Hooft Street, includes several hotels that offer visitors comfortable accommodations at an affordable price. These hotels are located close to Vondel Park and several concert venues.

As you can see, the area around Amsterdam’s Museum Square offers visitors many attractions that can make any trip to Amsterdam more memorable.

Have fun exploring these attractions the next time you visit Amsterdam’s Museum Square!
