About The Netherlands Opera

De Opera was founded after World War II. The company successfully toured through the Netherlands, but mostly in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. In 1964 the Opera changed its name to De Nederlandse Opera Stichting (The Netherlands Opera Foundation). Also, the character of the company changed: for every production a new artistic team is hired, as well as new soloists.

A Quick Traveler's Guide to Amsterdam's Netherlands Opera

The Netherlands Opera Company was founded in 1947 in Amsterdam to celebrate the Dutch artists that have contributed to the country’s culture and reputation. The current building that houses the company was opened in 1998 near the Waterlooplein subway terminal. The building hosts about ten new operatic productions each year.

Visitors who would like to see an opera production at the Netherlands Opera House should try to get their tickets at least 6 weeks in advance because tickets tend to sell out quickly for most productions.

If you can’t make it to one of the Netherlands Opera Company’s productions, you can still enjoy visiting the area around the current Netherlands Opera. This is the case because there are many attractions located near the Netherlands Opera House that can make your visit to Amsterdam more enjoyable. These attractions include Rembrandt Square, and the Hortous Botanical Gardens.

Rembrandt Square is located about 300 meters southwest of the Netherlands Opera near the intersection of Blauwburg and Weesperstraat. This destination is popular among many tourists because it features several museums, the Amsterdam Hermitage, a small movie theater and several small cafes that offer local cuisine, coffee and deserts.

The Hortous Botanical Gardens are open all year long from about 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM. They are located about 1 kilometer east of the Netherlands Opera building inside Amsterdam’s Plantage District. The gardens are publicly owned green spaces that feature over 4,000 species of flowers.

Some of the most popular attractions at the Hortous Botanical Gardens include the original garden spaces that were planted in 1682 by the Amsterdam City Council. Other popular attractions include a popular three-story greenhouse that teaches visitors about how plants can adapt to varying climate conditions. Visitors will also enjoy visiting the garden’s atriums and several exhibits that are devoted to tulips.

As you can see, the area around the Netherlands Opera House offers visitors many fun things to see and do. As a result, be sure to look for these and other venues the next time you are visiting Amsterdam.
