About Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
Amsterdam's airport, Schiphol, is the main airport in the Netherlands, but even the smaller airports like Rotterdam and Eindhoven - are not far from Amsterdam. The easiest and cheapest way to travel to Amsterdam from Schiphol is by train. This takes about a half hour to the Central Station.
A Quick Look At Schiphol Airport
Schiphol Airport began as a military base in 1916, and was initially used by commercial aircraft in 1920. Originally the area was a shallow lake where ships frequently sank during storms, thus the name Schiphol translates into Ship's Grave. The Amsterdam Airport is about eight miles from the Amsterdam ArenA stadium and about six miles from downtown Amsterdam
Schiphol Airport is located in the community of Haarlemmermeer, and is entirely below sea level. Schiphol has six runways, five of which are over ten thousand feet long. Based at Schiphol are KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Transavia, Martinair, Amsterdam Airways, plus Arkefly, and the airport had over forty-five million passengers in 2010. Schiphol has one big central terminal divided into three halls, from which concourses branch out, and there are plans to build an additional separate terminal.
Directly under the Schiphol Airport terminal is a railroad station offering connections to Centraal Station downtown, plus service to other Dutch cities such as Eindhoven, Rotterdam, and DeHague. International rail service to Berlin, Brussels, and Paris also leaves from the Schiphol rail station. Highways A4 and A9 reach Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which is served by several intercity bus routes from downtown and surrounding communities.
Schiphol Plaza sits before entering customs, which can be accessed by non-travelers and earns a lot of revenue for the airport. Schiphol airport has an on-site mortuary, plus the first airport library in the world. The Rijksmuseum has a branch at Schiphol, offering travelers an exhibition of classical and contemporary art. There is a spacious rooftop viewing area for aviation enthusiasts.
Just beyond the customs entrance is a park-like indoor area which provides the sights and sounds of the great outdoors, where passengers can relax, pedal stationary bikes, and take advantage of internet connections.
The TransPort building within the airport hosts the offices of Martinair and Transavia, while the original control tower now houses a restaurant. The World Trade Center Building is home to the SkyTeam airline alliance, while the Convair Building is used by some KLM Royal Dutch Airline offices.
